US imports of salmon increased 17% in 2012
For third month in a row, Chile is not only the largest salmon export country to the USA in terms of returns but also the largest exporter in terms of volume, with 98,094 tonnes in shipments in 2012 (34.93% of all salmon imported by the USA in the period).
The Chilean salmon companies exported products to the USA worth US$ 801,29 million in the period. These figures represent a 27.17 percent increase in value and an 64.87 percent increase in volume compared to 2011.
Canada was in second place, with returns of US$ 569,63 million and 94,893 tonnes. Those results represent increases of 3.83 and 19.81 percent in value and volume, respectively, compared to the previous year.
According to the trade data published by the Fisheries Statistics Division of the NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service, Norway was in third place with sales of US$ 154,92 million and 16,003 tonnes. Those numbers represent decreases of 33.67 and 18.61 percent in value and volume, respectively.
Meanwhile, the United Kingdom was in fourth place, with returns of US$ 95.47 million and 14,390 tonnes. These figures represent decreases of 22.05 and 15.77 percent in value and volume, respectively, compared to 2011.
