US$ 4 million designated for 3,300 unemployed workers
The short-term mission is to resuscitate the mass of unemployed salmon workers, 3,300 and counting, of who have lost their jobs throughout this year’s last semester and do not have any other employment options. Although this initial intervention program is yet to be thoroughly defined, it is starting with US$ 4 million to be used in direct subsidies of approximately US$ 250 per month (Chile’s bare minimum wage) for those workers with education levels no higher than elementary school and in need of social and occupational reorientation (approximately 600 workers fall in this category). For workers who are able to switch more easily to other productive areas, minimum wage subsidies will be provided to insert these workers into private companies such as mussel farms, where the company will be responsible for their training for four months. The remaining workers will be directed towards new government jobs that are being created through public services such as the National Forest Service (Conaf) and local governmental offices and municipalities.
