Trout farmers celebrate EU ruling

Published Modified

In a statement on its website, the British Trout Association (BTA) said: "We at the BTA recently supported the Danish Aquaculture Organisation in their work to challenge the Turkish state subsidy on exported trout, claiming it created unfair competition and that is has imposed huge economic losses on trout farmers from other EU countries.  The Commission saw in favour of the challenge and has imposed a duty of between 7 and nearly 10% on imported trout from Turkey."

In recent years, UK fish farmers have experienced increased pressure from the import of subsidised trout. Turkish imports have doubled between 2010 to 2013 and fish farmers across Europe have lost significant market share.

In the UK the trout industry is largely run by small family businesses, which leaves the industry particularly vulnerable to potential price wars.

"So, this is great news for you, the consumer. We know you care about the story behind your food, and this makes it easier for you to buy sustainable, high quality, local product, in turn supporting our British trout farmers," the BTA stated.
