The USA, Japan and Brazil are the main markets for Chilean salmon
Christian Pérez According to the latest annual report by the National Customs Service, the US was the largest market for Chilean salmon (Atlantic and Coho) in the first six months of 2014 (36%), followed by Japan (18%), Brazil (15%) and China and Germany, with 3 per cent each country. Likewise, Japan was the largest market for Chilean rainbow trout in the first semester of this year, accounting for 64 per cent of those exports, followed by the US (15%) and China (4%). Chilean exports of salmon and trout totalled US$ 2,313.1 million in the first six months of this year, representing a 34.2 per cent increase compared to the same period of 2013, when the industry had returns of US$ 1,723.8 million. While the returns from salmon exports experienced a 46 per cent increase up to June 2014 (US$ 1,929.7 million) compared to the same period in the previous year (US$ 1,325.8 million), the sales of rainbow trout recorded a 4 per cent decrease from US$ 398.0 million to US$ 383.4 million.
