The FAO investigates Chile’s aquaculture development
Dr. Nathanael Hishamunda has spent the majority of his career with the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations as an analyst of aquaculture development throughout the world. His research includes the economic, social, information and statistical aspects of all activities related to aquaculture and its sustainable development. According to Aqua.cl, this week Hishamunda together with Max Agüero, representative of the Inter American Centre for Sustainable Ecosystems Management (ICSED) realized a visit with Marine Harvest to better understand the current aquaculture situation regarding worker conditions and social benefits provided by aquaculture companies, and the level of professionalism and technological capacity of the industry. The visit was part of a study in progress for the next FAO publication of Aquaculture Development in Latin America, in conjunction with the ICSED. They visited one fish hatchery and one grow-out site and were “greatly impressed” by the physical infrastructure as well as the development generated by the company in its production centres. Hishamundo formally invited the Fresh Water Production manager Oscar Garay to the FAO headquarters in Rome to give a presentation about his experience with the company.
