Strengthening links with Brazil
The Institute of Aquaculture at Stirling University has had long-standing links with Brazil. Several well-known Brazilian aquaculture specialists have for example studied at the Institute of Aquaculture over the years. In recent months, the Institute has refreshed and significantly boosted its contact with Brazil. This began with a high-level visit to Stirling in March by an 8-member team from EMBRAPA complemented by senior representatives of the Ministry of Fisheries. Then, Brazilian colleagues visited key Institute facilities and laboratories and discussed current issues in development of aquaculture in Brazil.
From this visit, Professors Lindsay Ross and Herve Migaud were invited as guest speakers to AQUACIÊNCIA 2012 in Palmas, Tocantins, Brazil. Prof Ross spoke on Tools for Site Selection and Carrying Capacity Estimation and Prof Migaud spoke on Fish Reproduction. These events were also reported in the key national magazine, Panorama da Aqüicultura.
Dr Philip Scott was able to help us with the promotional work in Palmas, and in this way the Institute has been able to develop contacts with a large number of Brazilian researchers and research leaders. “Because of mutual interests, we know that there are many opportunities for research collaboration, advanced training collaboration and staff exchanges between Brazil and the Institute. There are significant opportunities for funding these exchanges and a major call is still open until September through the Ciências sem Fronteiras scheme for Brazilians wishing to apply for support,” the Institute said in a statement.
