State funds destined to minimize feeding impacts
“The primary objective of this project is to develop a tool that allows salmon production managers a better control over the biological conversion factor in feeding, the quality of the final product, and a minimization of environmental impact,” states Sandra Marín Arribas, academic of the Instituto de Acuicultura, Universidad Austral de Chile, who won the government funding for the project. According to Aqua.cl, the project will last for three years and will include the collaboration of companies such as Multiexport Foods, Pacific Star, Marine Harvest, Alitec, AquaChile, and Skretting. Participating institutions are INTESAL of SalmonChile, CIEN Austral (Center of Investigation in Nutrition, Food Technology and Sustainability), University of Santiago de Chile, Guelph University (Canada) and Texas A&M Universtiy (USA). Marcelo Urrutia, spokesman for Multiexport Foods commented, “One of the most important objectives of this project to contribute to a real adoption of policies in both the public sector and private enterprise regarding the concepts of environmental sustainability.”
