Although these news are encouraging, the Chilean Salmon Industry Association (SalmonChile) has opted for prudence. “We already surpassed the worst” said SalmonChile’s chairman César Barros adding that “we did not expect such amount of sowings” something that he believes “speeds up the recovery of this sector”.

This increased sowings seemed to be related with the decreased prevalence of ISA virus, something that has improved confidences. In that context, Invertec will increase its capital by USD 19 millions to finance their sowings for this year and 2011. Other major players, such as Marine Harvest Chile have also started plans oriented in the same direction.

According to La Tercera, if the local salmon production represented 35% of the world supply in 2008, this year the Chile market share will decrease to just 20%. While in 2009 the Chilean salmon industry exported USD 2,100 million it is expected that this year it will export USD 1,800 million supported by favourable prices.
