Smokehouse in salmon claim controversy
Truss was offering her support for a claim by H Forman & Son - a reputed London smokery - which believes that the ‘delicate taste and texture’ created by their special smoking cure, which has been used in the East End since the 19th Century, should be sufficient to warrant Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status for their smoked salmon.
However, Tom Campbell, who founded Fencebay Smokehouse in Ayrshire more than 25 years ago, told the Daily Mail: "Most people recognise that Scottish salmon is the best in the world. I don’t think too many will be swayed by it having London in its name."
Not surprisingly, the campaign – the first such bid by the capital – has not gone down well with the Scots, and is likely to leave leading figures north of the border, such as former First Minister Alex Salmond, distinctly unimpressed, the newspaper said.
