Sixth confirmed ISA case in Shetland

The site, which is owned by Skelda Salmon, is the last that remains stocked in the containment area, following the confirmation of the presence of the virus earlier this year.

The presence of ISA virus was previously confirmed on five salmon farms in the south west mainland area.  All of those farms also lay within the containment area that was established on 2 January 2009 when the first case of ISA was confirmed at a fish farm in the area.   According to local news source The Shetland News, the latest discovery throws a question mark over plans by fish farmers in the area to restock their cages next March under a new area management agreement, as there has to be a fallow period of six months after the disease is identified.
