Poseidon Bio Aqua Ltd is a subsidiary of a Taiwanese company, and it was recently granted a licence to produce up to 40 tonnes of shrimp per year in a vacant greenhouse in the Fraser Valley, just east of Vancouver. The parent company in Taiwan produces 30 tonnes of shrimp a month from two facilities.

The company has been successful in mapping the genome of the whiteleg shrimp, which would facilitate the genetic selection for disease resistance and increased growth. The shrimp will be produced in a facility using recirculated water, and the seed stock will come from Hawaii.

The operation will employ some 10-20 people initially, with a total workforce when the project is fully developed of 50-100, stated the Minister of Agriculture and Lands in his letter that granted the licence.
