Senators approved changes to the Fishing Law

This legislation which is needed to help the salmon industry, in particular, to implement the new production system. This model will help the industry to recover from Infectious Salmon Anemia (ISA).

In total, 28 senators voted to favor, three rejected it and five abstentions. Now, the bill will receive indications, until July 27th. After that procedure, the project will be voted in the Senate's Fishing Commission.

The debate was very intense and included strong critiques to the salmon industry and its responsibility in the serious crisis that affect the sector.

One of the main discussions is related to the authorizations or "concessions" for salmon farming. Some senators wants them to expire to 30 years. The Economy minister, Hugo Lavados, said that the option is being evaluated.

Some of the lawmakers said that it would be illogical that restrictions are imposed to new companies, while those who caused the "disaster", are allowed to have salmon farming permits forever.

The law would be promulgated in August.
