Search for new sources of fatty acids
Access to the fatty acids EPA and DHA, which are vital for salmon, is critical for the industry. Soon there will not be enough fish oil available to supply the demand for essential fatty acids in salmon feed.
Despite the fact that ongoing research may help to reduce the level of EPA and DHA required in salmon feed in the future, there is a need for new, cost-effective EPA and DHA sources to facilitate the sustainable growth of salmon production.
A number of companies, both nationally and internationally, are already attempting to develop new sources of fatty acids - such as through algae, yeast and plants (including genetically modified organisms).
The Norwegian Research Council has allocated NOK 8 million to research projects to generate new sources of oil rich in EPA and / or DHA as raw material for salmon.
FHF has allocated NOK 15 million for the same purposes.
