Seafood firm's expansion plan passed despite castle ruins claim

Published Modified

According to the Aberdeen Press and Journal, Denholm Seafoods at Peterhead hopes the new cold store and blast freezer buildings at its Castle Street base will improve the firm’s efficiency.

The application led to concerns being raised by archaeologists who claimed the site of the extension lies in the “historic mediaeval core” of the town.

According to environmental officers at Aberdeenshire Council, a fortress, understood to be Keith Inch Castle, once stood at the site and an 18th-century gun battery was positioned closed by, the newspaper reported.

Now that planning consent has been given, any digging at the site is expected to be closely monitored by an expert.
