SalmonChile hosts Innovation Workshop
“In today’s world, innovation is essential in order to adjust to market requirements and to establish an economic sector. An industry that does not adapt with the times and does not invest in innovation, technology and investigation, dies,” states César Barros of SalmonChile in his introductory speech for the 2nd Innovation Workshop for the Salmon Industry. The two-day workshop consisted of fourteen presentations on current projects such as genetic engineering, alternative energy applications, photoperiod technology, vaccine biotechnology, and logistics efficiencies to name a few; and a panel discussion including Arturo Clemment of Multiexport Foods, Patrick Dempster of AKVA Group Canada, Rodrigo Infante of SalmonChile, Oscar Garay of Marine Harvest Chile, and Hans Kossmann of Empresas Patagonia (as pictured). The consensus drawn was that Chile as a country is in a better position than ever before to seriously invest in long-term projects focused on innovation, research and development. However, the money available on a governmental level must be channelled more effectively towards specific focus areas that the state, private industry, and the academic sector all agree upon; similar to how the EU designates long-term financing for innovation, research and development.
