SalmonChile addresses limited education resources for future workforce
For nearly a year SalmonChile has been on a campaign to improve educational facilities, throughout the rural towns of Region X (Puerto Montt, Chiloé) and Region XI (Puerto Aysén, Puerto Cisnes), where the salmon industry provides employment. The initiative of the campaign was to donate 21 libraries to 21 public elementary schools with scarce educational resources. The majority of the towns chosen in this initiative had never had a library before. According to a press release by SalmonChile, this week the last but far from the least library was inaugurated in a local public school in Puerto Montt. For SalmonChile the library initiative meant an investment of US$192 thousand, which was paid for by a handful of associated member companies. The libraries include all of the same books and learning materials chosen by the Ministry of Education and are staffed with a professional librarian. Over 9,300 students will benefit from the initiative. At the inauguration ceremony Héctor Gallardo, Regional Minister of the Ministry of Education said, “SalmonChile’s donation is a short term investment that will be rewarded precisely through the progress of economic activity in our country.”
