Salmon industry starts measuring its carbon footprint

According to the journal Diario Pyme, several Chilean salmon producing companies have started the required procedures in order to measure their carbon footprint. Ventisqueros, for example, has commissioned to the consultancy company Global Projects a study to measure how much greenhouse gases (GHG) are emitted within their production.

The CEO of Global Projects and former delegate of Chile to the Convention on Climate Change of the United Nations, Jorge Urrutia, detailed that they are also working on a study to determine the amount of methane emissions generated in the decomposition of fouling adhered to salmon farming cages.

Thus, measuring the carbon footprint is a significant concern to Chilean exporters, given the coming enactment of the law "Grenelle II" in France, which will require from January 2011 on that all products sold in the country include a label with their carbon emissions.
