Salmon exports increased by 50% as of August
Likewise, the results obtained by the local salmon industry in August 2011 (US$ 178 million) were 41.7% higher compared to those returns obtained in the same month of 2010 (US$ 126 million) according to the monthly report of external trade prepared by the Chilean General Directorate of International Economic Relations (Direcon).
Direcon also explains that all the Chilean exports totalized US$ 55,303 million as of August this year, representing an increase of 24.5% compared to the same period of 2010, when the country exported products for US$ 44,432.
Meanwhile, according to the monthly report of external trade published by the National Customs Service, in the case of salmon (Atlantic and Coho) this increase is explained by a strong rise in volume (109%) that was able to compensate the decrease experienced in price (9%) within the same period. In August 2011, the volume of exported salmon had achieved 7,349 tonnes.
Regarding Rainbow trout, there were no major changes, since the higher price (16%) just balanced the lower volumes (-14%).
Japan was the largest market for trout, concentrating 66% of the exports, while USA was the largest market for salmon followed by Brazil, with a 47% and 19% share respectively.
