Salmon exports decreased 12%
According to a study submitted by the Chilean General Directorate of International Economic Relations (DIRECON) last year the local exports of salmonids totalized 360,700 tonnes representing a decrease over 17% compared to 2008 results.
Besides, within the last three years, exports of Chilean salmonids have presented a lower dynamism compared to other products from the alimentary sector. In effect, salmonids’ participation in the total alimentary exports have yielded ground to a 32% in 2009, representing six percentage points less than its peak in 2008.
Likewise, Direcon’s report detailed that this lower local salmon production has leaded prices up, compensating some negative effects of the current crisis. Unitary value of salmon exports increased 5.6% in 2009 compared to the previous year.
