Salmofood plans to swim, not sink
“Generate feed development, and incorporate new technologies to increase production capacity are the key factors for this activity (salmon feed production), and the time has come for us to make these investments,” states Juan Carlos Petersen, general manager of Salmofood, Chile’s one and only national salmon feed producer. The company which belongs to the national salmon companies Invertec and Yadrán, and Inversiones Degán (led by the Claro and Echeverría families), will invest US$ 15 million to renovate and amplify their processing plant near Castro, on the island of Chiloé. The plan is to increase their production capacity from 110 thousand tons to 240 thousand tons per year, which would allow them to manage 13% of the industry’s market as opposed to the current 10%. According to Aqua.cl, Salmofood earned approximately US$ 100 million in sales and US$ 6.4 million in revenues last year. The company recently introduced a new line of production in accordance with their investment plans. “From the existing competition where salmon feed producers operate, it obligates us to have the capacity of completing an order and have it arrive to a farm site within 24 hours,” states Petersen.
