Salmar postpones entering the Chilean salmon industry

Christian Pérez Salmar will continue interested in Chile as the local industry is one of the most important in the world in addition to the non-tariff barriers recently imposed by Russia, which open up new opportunities, Mr. Inge said. He said that entering into Chile is not in his immediate plans, however, once the sanitary problems are solved –which have raised the production costs of the Chilean industry, the company will re-examine that possibility. According to the financial journal Estrategia, Salmar estimates that the Chilean production of Atlantic salmon will grow no more than 2 per cent to nearly 478,000 tonnes this year, in contrast to what would happen in the Norwegian industry, which will expand 7 percent reaching 1.2 million tonnes. SalMar expects to produce more than 145,000 tonnes of salmon this year, in the midst of its expansion plan. 133.000 tonnes in Norway, and about 12,000 tonnes in the UK.
