Region Aysén feels another quake
For the people of Aysén, April 21, 2007 was the most frightening day on record when an earthquake of 6.2 on the Richter scale and subsequent tsunami wreaked havoc on the towns of Puerto Chacabuco and Puerto Aysén. Prior to that day and since, locals have had to simply accustom themselves to the frequent tremours, and hope that “the big one” has already passed. In October however a notably sized quake of 5.2 was registered in the Region, but fortunately the epicentre was not near the populated areas of Puerto Chacabuco and Puerto Aysén. The epicentre of the quake this week was in the Aysén fjord, the same fjord where the epicentre of the quake in April was located. According to Aqua.cl, no report of personal injury or material damage has been reported with regard to this week’s quake, and the Regional Office of Civil Protection and Emergency (OREMI) has announced the Region as a yellow-alert area.
