Presidential candidate criticizes government and salmon industry
Sebastian Piñera took advantage of the environmental disaster occurring with the second eruption of the Chaiten Volcano, to realize an early and unplanned campaign effort throughout the affected region. En route he stopped through Puerto Montt to visit with salmon worker federations to listen to the woes of unemployment and to speak with the press. According to the Llanquihue Piñera accused the government stating, "The government has acted in a disgracefully slow and erratic manner. The truth is that the government doesn’t know what to do and hasn’t done what it has to do," claims Piñera. He did not however go on to say what exactly the government should be doing, and continued instead to criticize the salmon industry. "It was crazy to have put up salmon farms one right next to the other, because as soon as the first virus arrived it spread to the entire industry. They must leave open spaces and firewalls, just as they have done in the leading countries." Basic to say the least, and he went on to speak about the massive layoffs occurring in the salmon industry. "´Companies should not let go of their workforce. Not only for humanitarian reasons, but also because it is in the companies’ best interest to have a good relations with their workers. And times like these are when to demonstrate that."
Sebastian Piñera is one of Chile’s most wealthy businessmen and has campaigned for the nation's presidency since 2005. Chile's presidential elections are to take place in December of this year.
