Sernapesca detected Piscine reovirus (PRV) in 10 sea farming sites last April (read more) and more recently detected presence of this viral agent in some freshwater farming sites. However, the director of Sernapesca, Juan Luis Ansoleaga, explains that PRV has not caused HSMI in Chilean salmonids.

Mr Anseolaga also commented that PRV is widely spread in Norway and other salmon producing countries. Besides, he said that PRV does not cause important economic or production impacts in those places and has not required implementation of specific control actions against this viral agent.

Sernapesca has decided to extend the initial analysis for HSMI to other Chilean regions and also into freshwater farming sites due to preventive reasons. Likewise, several professionals of Sernapesca have been trained into diagnosis of HSMI in Norway

Finally, Sernapesca will publish this year a complete report on the epidemiologic study for this specie in Chile and, depending on those results, will determinate the following steps in relation to the control and surveillance of this disease and its viral agent.
