Over 130 lay-offs due to ISA

Not the most heartwarming news, to receive a lay-off notice instead of the standard employee Christmas greeting this year, but sadly that is what at least 130 salmon farm or processing plant workers will receive during the closure process of many farms due to the ISA (infectious salmon anemia) problem that surfaced for the first time in some of Chile’s Atlantic salmon farms in late July. Five months later the domino affect of fish loss has tumbled upon the local workforce. At least 39 Atlantic farm sites located within the sector of Chiloé are under quarantine approximately 5 of those have suffered outbreaks of the virus resulting in closures. The companies most affected by ISA are Marine Harvest, Cultivos Marinos Chiloé, Aguas Claras y Salmones Chiloé (part of Empresas AquaChile), Invertec, Holding and Trading S.A., Mainstream and Camanchaca.
