According to recent customs information, Chile exported a totla of 68,217 tonnes of salmonids in the first month of this year, representing a 23 per cent increase compared to the 55,425 tonnes exported in January 2014. Returns, however, experienced only a 2.3 per cent increase, rising to US$ 431 million.

Had the two comanies merged already, Mitsubishi – and its Chilean subsidiaries Cermaq Chile and Salmones Humboldt - would have been in second place, with 10,168 tonnes of exports, worth US$ 57 million, the financial journal Estrategia reports.

In terms of returns, Mitsubishi would have been followed by Los Fiordos, with US$ 31 million; Salmones Austral, the company that result from the merger of Pacific Star and Trusal, with US$ 30 million; Multiexport, with US$ 26 million; Salmones Camanchaca, with US$ 24 million; Granja Marina Tornagaleones, with US$ 20 million; Ventisqueros, with US$ 18 million; and Blumar, with US$ 17 million.
