Norwegians unruffled by Russian embargo
When Russia closed the borders for Norwegian goods in early August, salmon prices instantly dropped from 38 to 32 NOK/kg in a few weeks. In recent weeks, however, prices have started to rise again, and are currently level with those experienced in the same period last year.
Deputy CEO of export company Seaborn, Frank Yri, says this is partially due to the fact that there are less salmon available, since large volumes have already been harvested as a result of disease or lice problems.
"We see a rise in price because of increased demand for salmon in the world market. Simultaneously the industry is harvesting smaller size fish than the corresponding week last year," says Yri.
"The harvested volume has been large earlier this fall because of lice and PD, as much of the fish have been harvested earlier than normal," he adds.
Despite this, however, Yri is still looking forward to a return to the Russian market.
