Norwegian Government has given up the goal of beeing the world aquaculture leader
The background for Wilgårds statement comes as a reaction to a paper from the Ministry of Fishery and Costal Affairs which says that there is no room for further expansion in aqauculture farming in Southern Norway. It is suggested that production capacity has to be moved from the south to the north.
- This means that the government indicates no more expansion for nearly 70% of the Norwegian salmon farming industry, says Wilsgård to kyst.no. In his opinion the paper from the government strongly contradicts report from Sintef as well as the Institute for Marine Research which both claims a growth potential for the salmon farming industry by ten times the present volume which in 2012 will be around 1 million tons of salmon and trout.
