
Norway and Canada surpass Chile in US
Chilean salmon producing companies exported products to the US worth US$ 734.91 million as of July 2015, representing a 19.8 per cent decrease compared to the US$ 916.80 million registered in the first seven months of 2014. Despite this decline, Chile was the largest exporter country of salmon and trout to the US during the period, totalling 78,490 tonnes, which represent a 5.2 per cent decrease compared to the same period of 2014 (82,797 tonnes). The largest decrease is seen in the exports of fresh whole Atlantic salmon.
Canada was in second place, with returns of US$ 374.80 million and 55,612 tonnes. Those results represent 41.7 and 85.1 per cent increases in value and volume, respectively, compared to the first seven months of 2014. The largest increases are seen in fresh whole Atlantic salmon.
According to the trade data published by the Fisheries Statistics Division of the NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service, Norway was in third place with sales of US$ 208.16 million and 23,485 tonnes. Those numbers represent 15.3 and 53.4 per cent increases in value and volume, respectively. In this case, the largest increases are seen in frozen fillets and fresh whole of Atlantic salmon.
If Canada's and Norway's volumes are combined (79,097 tonnes), the result exceeds Chilean exports to the US during the period. In comparison, as of July 2014 the first two countries’ combined exports were of 45,340 tonnes versus 82,797 tonnes from Chile; while as of July 2013, there were 58,065 tonnes against 70,097 tonnes sent from Chile.
Other market players Meanwhile, China (China, Hong Kong and Taipei) was in fourth place, with returns of US$ 147.76 million and 23,763 tonnes. These figures represent 4.6 and 11.2 per cent decreases in value and volume, compared to the first seven months of 2014. The largest increase is seen in frozen fillets of salmon NSPF.
Finally, the United Kingdom was in fifth place, with returns of US$ 59.78 million and 7,684 tonnes. Those results represent 36.1 and 28.1 per cent decreases in value and volume, respectively, compared to the first seven months of the past year. The largest decreases in Scottish products are seen in fresh whole and fresh fillets of Atlantic salmon.
US imports of all salmon and trout products as of July 2015 totalled 206,615 tonnes, worth US$ 1,692.29 million.
