Newfoundland community anxious as rival town lands salmon deal
Tor-Eddie Fossbakk Last June Cooke had originally picked Fortune as its site to process farmed salmon, but walked away because workers were divided over whether they would be represented by the Fish, Food and Allied Workers union. Instead of Fortune, Cooke has chosen to lease the Barry Group's fish processing plant in Harbour Breton for one year. Cooke communications director Nell Halse told CBC that the contract means a full year's work for about 120 people, expected to process about 9,000 tons of salmon between now and next October. According to Halse is not everything lost for Fortune and underlined that the contract in Harbour Breton is for only one year. However, Fortune Mayor Alec Noseworthy is worried that Cooke Aquaculture will get comfortable in Harbour Breton and not come back. Capture: Nell Halse, Communications Director for Cooke Aquaculture.
