New, useful Aquaculture Drug-use Guidance Poster available

Published Modified

Odd Grydeland

The aquaculture industry in the US has access to only a short list of drugs approved for fish farming, and most of the drugs are on the same, short list of drugs available to Canadian fish farmers. It is therefore relatively easy to create a poster that describes:

  • The name of the drug
  • The species of fish it is approved for
  • The disease agents it is approved for
  • The dosage and duration of treatment
  • The prescribed withdrawal time after last treatment before harvesting can be done

It is "A Quick Reference Guide to FDA-Approved Drugs for Use in Aquaculture" states the web site of the Wisconsin Aquaculture Association Inc. (WAA). This type of poster could be a useful training tool for aquaculturists everywhere, although in some other jurisdictions one might not have room on one page for all the medicines available.

A free copy of the US made poster can be downloaded from the Internet, according to the information peace on the WAA web site;

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's Aquatic Animal Drug Approval Partnership Program, and the American Fisheries Society's Fish Culture and Fish Health Sections, in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Center for Veterinary Medicine, have published a large-fomat laminated poster listing all currently approved drugs for use on aquaculture species. The Poster also, and possibly most importantly, describes how the drugs may be legally used (i.e., dose, concentration, duration, etc.) and under what circumstances (i.e., the specific disease or conditions). As new drugs are approved or as new conditions for use are approved for drugs already approved, the Poster will be revised.
