New species could penetrate market
Karen Galloway, marketing manager at Seafish Industry Authority, says that species such as tilapia and pangasisus (Vietnamese catfish) could become contenders on the British seafood retail market in the coming years. “In the EU, fresh water species such as carp are huge in countries like Germany, Hungary and Poland. “In Britain today, the population of Polish people is around 1.4 per cent, according to the Guardian newspaper. In cities such as Edinburgh, it is 4 per cent. With such a significant group of Polish people in the country, we are already seeing a range of new products and Polish brands coming on the market. This could also happen with fish,” she says. The two species Galloway believes could become more prominent in the future are tilapia and pangasius. “Pangasius has a relatively neutral flavour, similar to the species commonly eaten in Eastern Europe, and offers good value for money. “This really could change the UK market,” she says.
