The Department of Microbial Biotechnology of the University of Valparaiso has won a research grant of US$ 700,000 for its project, “The utilization of functional feed additives of bacterial origin as an alternative for the use of antibiotics in aquaculture.” Alejandro Dinamarca, leading investigator of the project states, “Our objective is not to kill pathogenic micro-organisms as antibiotics do, but rather to develop molecules that will prevent bacterial infection in farmed fish.” The project is financed by Fondef, the state agency that funds scientific and technological development, and will receive the collaboration of EWOS.
