The Parliamentary Committee of Fisheries approved yesterday a law proposed by six parliament representatives from Chile’s principal aquaculture and commercial fisheries regions, which has been in process since March of last year. The law sanctions stricter penalties for aquaculture and commercial fishing companies found guilty of transgressing the boundaries defined for aquaculture farming and fishing licenses. Prior to this new law the penalty for fishing outside of legal fishing boundaries for example was a fine, today a company may have its license revoked. And as for the aquaculture sector, salmon or mussel farming companies for example caught producing beyond their license boundary on more than one occasion may also result in an expiration of the license.
