New Brunswick's fisheries minister, Rick, Doucet, believes the new facility is going to "transform aquatic animal health science in our province, according to Times & Transcript online.

The new lab is expected to meet national certification requirements to conduct regulatory and research fish-health testing. It will further support and promote the sustainable development and competitiveness of both the aquaculture and fisheries industries in the Atlantic region.

It is a goal that New Brunswick aquaculture will produce about fifty per cent of the province's fish and seafood products by 2030. Therefore, the new AVC lab will be a great asset to the industry's growth.

When the new lab is done, it will replace a current regional office in St. George. Some of the services it will offer will be veterinary diagnostics, emergency response and follow-up to reportable diseases affecting marine life. It will also take a proactive role to guard against pathogens that could harm fish and shellfish.
