MP calls for stricter food labelling
Last week in Parliament, Conservative MP Richard Bacon said that this information would enable people to make more "informed decisions" about food they purchase, the internet news source Talking Retail reported. All producers, Bacon said as he introduced the food labelling bill, should adhere to the same standards and this could boost quality. Some pork products produced abroad are not made under the same animal welfare standards they would be in the UK, he added. Moreover, Bacon said, consumers are being "misled" when they buy items that producers claim have been manufactured in the UK but have been imported from elsewhere. He said: "Norwegian salmon that has been smoked in Scotland should not supposedly be called Scottish, but it can lawfully be described as 'salmon smoked in Scotland'." Professor Tim Landg told a conference in Liverpool last month that food labels should include nutritional information as well as details on how far the product has travelled, the news source wrote.
