More talk about fish health in Chile

Depending on whom you talk with, the issue of fish health in Chile’s salmon industry may sound like a logical growing pain or like a time bomb about to destroy an ecosystem. An international conference on the ISA disease that concludes today, was organized and hosted by SalmonChile in conjunction with the National Fisheries Service (Sernapesca) in order to bring together professionals from Norway, Scotland, the Faroe Islands, Canada and the U.S., to talk about their experience in dealing with the disease. Last August in Chile, salmon companies within a certain geographic area were affected for the first time with an outbreak of the disease in Atlantic salmon, and the salmon industry association as well as the Chilean government are seeking help from those countries that have successfully dealt with the problem. Leaders of the NGO Pure Salmon Campaign had planned to attend but much to their chagrin were not allowed to participate. But more opportunity lie ahead for fish health talk in Chile. Next month ADL Diagnostic will host an international workshop on AGD (Amoebic Gill Disease), and in March of 2008 the Universidad Austral will host the international conference on Sea Lice.
