More FDA investigation of imported seafood needed
Tor-Eddie Fossbakk According to an article on Forbes.com, the Associated Press had earlier in the week published a review indicating that at as much as, of not more, 1 million pounds of frozen shrimp, catfish or eel farmed in China were on an agency watch list but were not sent for inspection. The AP report has raised significant concern among some US House of Representatives who question the FDA inspection routines. They would like the agency to explain what portion of all imports from China are being inspected, not only seafood. The FDA said it has about 450 people working to screen all imported goods it is responsible for, about 20 million shipments, including fish, vegetables and pharmaceuticals. FDA reported that is flagged 19 out of the 200 shipments on the list provided by the news agency.
