Mixed fortunes for exports

Christian Pérez According to figures from SalmonChile, the country exported 319,258 tonnes of salmonids in the first seven months of this year. 80,961 tonnes of those exports went to Japan up to July this year, representing a 21.4 per cent decrease compared to the same period of 2013 and a 36.2 per cent decrease compared to the first seven months of 2012.   Salmonid exports to Russia totalled 19,735 tonnes, representing a 37.5 per cent decrease compared to the same period of 2013 and a 185.7 per cent increase compared to the first seven months of 2012.   By contrast, the shipments of salmonids to the US totalled 83,916 tonnes up to July this year, representing a 13.5 per cent increase compared to the same period of 2013 and 42.4 per cent increase compared to the first seven months of 2012. A similar situation was experienced by those exports to Brasil, which totalled 49,870 tonnes up to July this year, showing an 11.1 per cent increase compared to the same period of 2013 and 38.9 per cent increase compared to the first seven months of 2012. Overall, exports of Atlantic salmon have increased in 2014 compared to previous years, while exports of Coho salmon and trout have decreased.
