Despite economic downturn and uncertainty, in the remote port town of Porvenir, businessmen Luis Alberto Turconi and Michael Bianchi are forging ahead with their multi-million dollar project that intends to turn "Useless Bay" into a truly facetious name on the map. They plan to turn the bay into the most productive mussel farming operation in Magallanes Region, and are constructing a modern processing plant with processing lines not only for mussels, but commercially fished species such as Chilean sea bass, king crab, southern hake, and others as well. According to Mundo Acuicola the processing and cold storage facilities will provide permanent direct employment for 70 workers and indirect employment for more than 100. Employee housing will be provided for both families and single workers, and more workers will be needed as the mussel farming operations develop. "Our plan is to invest US$ 20 million now and afterwards reinvest to continue growing, not only for our benefit but the benefit of all in Porvenir," states Bianchi.
