Diver dies at Mowi salmon farm in Chile
Another diver has died while working on a fish farm in Chile, Fish Farming Expert’s Chilean sister site Salmonexpert.cl reports.
The deceased was a 27-year-old man from the city of Coronel, Biobío Region, who provided diving services for a contracting company called Tridente, according to Radio Revelación. The tragedy brings the total number of deaths in this type of work to more than 10 so far in 2026.
The fatal accident occurred last Thursday at the Bhutan 7 fish farm of Mowi Chile, which is located approximately 47 nautical miles southwest of Puerto Aguirre.
Deep regret
“We deeply regret the death of the worker from the contracting company El Tridente, which occurred during diving operations at a fish farm located in the Aysén Region. As a company, we extend our sincere condolences to his family, loved ones, and coworkers,” Mowi Chile told Salmonexpert.cl.
“Our priority at this difficult time is to support the worker’s family, provide support to the teams at the fish farm, and collaborate with the competent authorities, who are investigating the circumstances of this unfortunate event.”
Tridente stated that it will actively cooperate with the relevant authorities and provide all necessary information to clarify the circumstances of the tragic event.
Investigation has begun
Once the tragedy was reported, the Public Prosecutor’s Office instructed that the first investigative steps be carried out, including the identification of the equipment involved, the registration of witnesses, the taking of initial statements and the transfer of the deceased person to Puerto Chacabuco.
Meanwhile, the Permanent Maritime Prosecutor of the Aysén Maritime Governorate initiated the first actions aimed at supporting the Summary Maritime Administrative Investigation, in order to determine the causes, circumstances and possible responsibilities of the accident, if any.
Salmon sector unions called for the formation of an intersectoral and inclusive working group, with the aim of moving towards real and lasting solutions to eradicate fatal accidents in fishery operations, “without forgetting that there are families who have lost loved ones in circumstances that we must not normalise”.
