Women gaining importance in male dominated industry

Yesterday a new publication on behalf of the Undersecretary of Fisheries, the Nacional Fisheries Service and the directive of the Port Services, was introduced to the public and private sector regarding the impact and importance of the female workforce within the fisheries and aquaculture sector. According to Aqua.cl, Inés Montalva, director of Chile’s national fisheries service Sernapesca, stated in yesterday’s inauguration, “With the objective of advancing the modernization of the State, the government has promoted the integration of the perspective of gender, which, little by little, allows for improvement of the further growth of fairness and equality.” The publication provides statistical information on the fisheries workforce broken down by gender for the artisanal, industrial and sportfishing sectors. According to Sernapesca, the total workforce in Chile’s fisheries sector reaches 59,600 fishermen, of which 5,500 are women.
