We have the obligation to save the industry
Óscar Garretón, president of the public-private entity Fundación Chile, does not want to enter into discussion regarding the claim that Fundación Chile made last month; (see 17.11.08 - Fundación Chile warned about sanitary crisis in 2000), however, he comments “Our concern today is to help resolve the sanitary problem with the salmon industry and not be smug that we ‘told them so’. If we were certain in the year 2000 of what was going to happen to the salmon industry and no one listened to us… it is a failure on behalf of Fundación Chile also.” According to el Mercurio, Garretón believes that Chile as a country has the obligation to recuperate the salmon industry. He says it is one of the country’s star export products and the country’s southern region depends on salmon for work.
