Volcano does not harm the seafood

Published Modified

The main components of the volcanic ash which may pose a risk are sulphur, particulate matter, fluoride and heavy metals.

It is unlikely that volcanic ash would have any effect on farmed- or feral fish sea water. The conclusion is based on the chemical composition of seawater, its capacity to neutralize acid rain and it’s large dilution capacity.

The Norwegian food safety Authority will follow the situation closely. If the situation changes dramatically or the eruption will be long-lasting the situation will be re-evaluated and new information will be given.
