Volcanic ash destroys Chaitén and Futaleufú
Like the explosion of an atomic bomb, people watched yesterday morning as the immense mushroom cloud grew by the hour. The few remaining ranchers in the Chaitén and Futaleufú areas were advised by the nation’s Ministry of the Interior to abandon their homes and livestock, due to the increasing danger of further eruptions. The entire watershed from Futaleufú to Chaitén is choked and contaminated by volcanic ash resulting in an absence of a potable water supply, and the surrounding vegetation is buried under a thick layer of ash that has turned into a slick layer of wet cement from the rains following the last days eruptions.
