Verlasso salmon still affects results in AquaChile

Published Modified

Christian Pérez Just like in the 3 previous quarterly reports, AquaChile attributes responsability to Verlasso salmon in the negative EBIT/Kg obtained by the company in the period. According to AquaChile, Verlasso salmon -a project developed together with DuPont, has required higher production, branding and marketing costs since this product is still in the market test stage. However, AquaChile underlines that Verlasso salmon is the first and only farmed salmon already classified as "Good Alternative" by the Seafood Watch programme of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Meanwhile, the company obtained an EBIT of US$ -1.24/Kg of Rainbow trout as of September 2013, compared to US$ -0.15 in the same period of the previous year; and US$ +0.1//Kg of Coho salmon in the first nine months of this year, compared to an EBIT of US$ +0.73/Kg as of September 2012. Despite this negative accumulated results in the first nine of this year, the EBIT/Kg for all these species were better in Q3 2013 compared to the same quarter of 2012. The salmon division of AquaChile registered sales of close to US$ 405.5 million as of September this year, which represent a 98.6 percent increase compared to the first nine months of 2012. This improvement is mainly explained by the 309 percent increase seen in the sales of Atlantic salmon, reports the company.
