Vaccine against maturation
In four years, the researchers investigate whether it is possible to develop a vaccine that prevents farmed fish become sexually mature. If the method works, it will also solve problems that escaped farmed salmon spawn with wild fish, reports the Institue for Marine Research.
- We are very pleased that the Norwegian Research Council will allocated nearly 40 million to this effort. The project is relevant to the aquaculture industry and it also has an important management-oriented dimension related to sustainability and welfare, says Tore Nepstad, executive director of the Marine Institute. The project is being led by the Marine Institute, and is a collaboration with NOFIMA, the Universities of Tromsø, Bergen, Utrecht and Freiburg, and Aqua Gen, Leroy Seafood, Vaxxinova and MSD Health.
