USA, Japan and Brazil are the main markets for Chilean salmon
Christian Pérez According to the most recently published annual report of foreign trade prepared by the National Customs Service, the US was the largest market for Chilean salmon (Atlantic and Coho) up to March 2014 (33%), followed by Japan (24%), Brazil (15%) and China, with 3 percent. Likewise, Japan was the largest market for Chilean Rainbow trout in the first quarter of this year, concentrating 58 percent of those exports, followed by the US (18%) and China (3%). The Chilean exports of salmon and trout totalized US$ 1,222.1 million in the first three months of this year, representing a 36 percent increase compared to the same period of 2013, when the industry had returns of US$ 898.3 million. While the returns from salmon exports experienced a 53 percent increase up to March 2014 (US$ 1,054.7 million) compared to the previous year (US$ 691.0 million), the sales of Rainbow trout recorded a 19 percent decrease from US$ 207.3 million to US$ 167.4 million.
