
USA, Japan and Brazil are the main markets for Chilean salmon
Christian Pérez According to the most recently published annual report of foreign trade prepared by the National Customs Service, the US was the largest market for Chilean salmon (Atlantic and Coho) in February 2014 (37%), followed by Japan (21%), Brazil (19%), Germany and China, with 3 percent each. Likewise, Japan was the largest market for Chilean Rainbow trout in the second month of this year, concentrating 53 percent of those exports, followed by the US (22%) and Thailand (10%). The Chilean exports of salmon and trout totalized US$ 757 million in the first two months of this year, representing a 31.8 percent increase compared to January and February 2013, when the industry had returns of US$ 574.4 million. While the returns from salmon exports experienced a 49.9 percent increase up to February 2014 (US$ 662.3 million) compared to the previous year (US$ 441.8 million), the sales of Rainbow trout recorded a 28.6 percent decrease from US$ 132.6 million to US$ 94.7 million.
