Too many players in the Chilean salmon industry
Mr. Gutiérrez said that Multiexport Foods has been trying to consolidate the local salmon industry, although he made clear that he would not reveal any possible negotiation.
He further explained that the major reason why it has not been possible to consolidate the industry after the so-called 'ISA virus crisis' is because "we have not had any definitive rules. This situation causes different views among the salmon producing companies regarding their own production capacities in the long-term" he said.
According to the financial magazine Capital, he also said that the salmon industry will continue being great business for the country and that the current and prolonged crisis should not lead to confusion. "We have created an industry from zero that now exports over US$ 3,000 million. Those regions where we are present are those with the largest economic growth and less unemployment rates in the country. Besides, we provide employment in places where no other economic activity can offer jobs, something that is very important for the country from the geopolitical point of view."
Finally, Mr. Gutiérrez said that the Chilean salmon industry will emerge stronger after this crisis, becoming more efficient, better regulated, more consolidated and with a greater long-term sustainability.
